Avalanche’s Cale Makar on Wednesday was named one of the three finalists for the 2020-21 James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded “to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position.”

Makar, 22, is one of the three top vote-getters along with Rangers’ Adam Fox and Lightning’s Victor Hedman. The ballots were submitted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

In his second full season with Colorado, he totaled 44 points (eight goals and 36 assists) in 44 games. His 1.00 points-per-game average led all defensemen and is the first Avs player to accomplish the feat since the franchise moved to in 1995.

He is the second Colorado player to be named an award finalist so far this year. Last week, goaltender Philipp Grubauer was announced as one of the three for the Vezina Trophy.

Makar, who won the Calder Memorial Trophy last year for the league’s top rookie, is the fourth Avalanche player to be named a finalist. If he wins, he’ll be the first Colorado player to win the trophy. Rob Blake (finished third in 2001-02), Ray Bourque (second in 2000-01) and Sandis Ozolinsh (third in 1996-97) were the other three Avs finalists.
