If the Colorado State football program hopes to be a part of future College Football Playoff discussions when the bracket presumably expands to 12 teams, consider its nonconference scheduling strategy a solid step forward.
The Rams have added yet another Power 5 opponent to its future schedule, announcing Friday the addition of a game at Washington to start the 2025 season.
The game against the Pac-12 power is set for Aug. 30 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, setting up a 2025 slate that also includes a home game against Texas Tech and a trip to Vanderbilt.
Colorado State is now scheduled to play at least two Power 5 programs each season through 2027. In six of those seven seasons, a major conference team will visit Canvas Stadium at least once.
With the College Football Playoff expected to expand from four to 12 teams at some point during that timeframe, the collection of Power 5 games could play a role in future Rams playoff bids.
Under the proposal presented last month, the top six conference champions would receive automatic entry into the College Football Playoff. Given that at least one conference champion would have to come from outside the Power 5, a team that wins its conference and knocks off a couple of major conference opponents would likely have the upper hand in the CFP committee rankings.
