DU Pioneers hockey skates past Western Michigan Broncos, 3-2 20-1

Denver goaltender Corbin Kaczperski claimed a win in his DU hockey debut, as the Pioneers knocked off Western Michigan 3-2 inside the NCHC pod in Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday.

Denver scored a pair of goals in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, with Cole Guttman tapping in a power play goal on the Pios’ first power play of the game and defenseman Kyle Mayhew netting a chip-shot score.

After a scoreless second period that saw the Pios kill three power plays, Western Michigan’s Pal Washe scored on a breakaway 33 seconds into the third to even the score. The tie didn’t last long, however, as DU forward Kohen Olischefski scored within minutes. Kaczperski kept the puck out of the net the rest of the way to help the Pios (3-4-0) secure their third win in four games.

Denver returns to the ice Thursday against Miami (Ohio) at 6:35 p.m.
