King Soopers store in Greenwood Village reopens day after scrawled threat found

A King Soopers store in Greenwood Village was open Monday after having closed a day earlier after police discovered a graffiti message scrawled on a picnic table at a nearby park.

The message, “Boulder strong is about to be strong,” an apparent reference to the March 2021 supermarket shooting in Boulder that left 10 dead, was discovered Sunday in Castlewood Park just north of the Soopers location at East Orchard Road and South Holly Street and caused the company to close the location temporarily.

The park is across from The Preserve, a subdivision of multi-million-dollar homes. Greenwood Village Police spokeswoman Crystal Dean said the agency had no leads or suspects.

King Soopers spokeswoman Jessica Trowbridge on Monday said the closure was “out of an abundance of caution.” Additional security was placed at the store and other nearby locations.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our associates and customers,” Trowbridge said in an email.
