Rockies’ Chris Owings goes on 60-day injured list with left thumb sprain

Manafort

Bad fortune continues stalking the Rockies.

The club announced Sunday that utility player Chris Owings was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL. He’s dealing with a sprained left thumb. The team has said that X-rays were negative and surgery would not be required.

Just how long Owings will be out is undetermined.

The move opened up a spot on Colorado’s 40-man roster and the club filled it by
claiming right-handed reliever Ashton Goudeau off of waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to their alternate training site in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Losing Owings for a lengthy period of time is a big blow for the Rockies. He slashed .533/.588/1.133 before going on the IL on April 10. At the time, he led the National League with three triples, three doubles and two stolen bases. Plus, his versatility allowed him to play both the infield and outfield.

Owings played in just 17 games last season before going on the injured list with a strained left hamstring on Aug. 20. He missed the remainder of the season.
