Erasing Joonas Donskoi’s $3.9 million cap hit through the 2022-23 season will help the Avalanche re-sign captain Gabe Landeskog, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 28.
The expansion Seattle Kraken is apparently making that happen.
The period where the Kraken had exclusive interview and negotiation rights with all unprotected free agents ended Wednesday morning, and the Kraken is reportedly set on selecting Donskoi in the evening draft.
Seattle’s one selection from the Avs was due at 8 a.m. MT Wednesday. The draft begins at 6 p.m. MT.

Seattle could have also chosen center J.T. Compher, who is making $3.5 million through 2022-23, or defenseman Erik Johnson, who is at $6 million through the same year, among others. The more expensive the Kraken went, the better the chance the Avs can keep Landeskog in Denver.
In addition to Landeskog, the Avalanche still must sign restricted free agent defenseman Cale Makar, RFA Tyson Jost, and attempt to sign goalie Philipp Grubauer. The Avs also must round out their roster with complimentary players from trades and free agency.
