UNC Bears men’s hoops adds to win column with 83-75 win at Denver 20-1

The beginning of both halves made it seem like the Denver Pioneers were going to blow out the University of Northern Colorado, but the Bears managed to claw back both times, adding Wednesday’s game to the win column.

UNC moved to 3-1 on the season after defeating Denver (1-4), 83-75, behind three 20-point performances and clutch shots from the charity stripe.

Denver started the game with an 18-5 run in the first eight minutes of the first half and went on a quick 10-4 run early in the second. The Pioneers looked like they were in total control both times, but then gave up necessary possessions.

DU finished the game with 12 turnovers and 28 personal fouls. One player fouled out. The team also couldn’t keep up on the boards, losing the rebounding battle 38-30.

UNC didn’t have a clean game by any means. The team racked up 19 turnovers and 20 fouls of its own, but the Bears managed to stay on top because of the hot shooting.

They made 10 shots from deep, above their average of eight 3s per game, and went 23-of-49 from the floor.

Junior guard Daylen Kountz, a transfer from CU, led the team in scoring with 26 points. Six points came from the 3-point line, while he hit 12 straight from the free throw line. One of this two 3-pointers gave the Bears a 31-29 lead at 3:03 in the first half, putting UNC in a positive scoring position.

Junior guards Bodie Hume (21 points, nine rebounds) and Matt Johnson (21 points, two rebounds) tied for second in scoring.

Johnson, like Kountz, came up big from the line against the Pioneers. He went 6-of-6 during crunch time to secure UNC’s win.

Freshman forward Jamel Melvin, despite his relative inexperience, provided much needed support in the front court after junior forward Kur Jockuch got into foul trouble.

Melvin contributed four points, four rebounds and an assist in 22 minutes, his career-high for playing time. Prior to the game, Melvin was only averaging 3.5 minutes per contest.

Lastly, though he was quieter on the scoring front, sophomore guard Marque English added six boards in the win, matching Kountz’s total off the glass.

The Bears will continue non-conference play at Utah State on Friday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., and fans can watch or listen to the radio broadcast through the Utah State website.
